The 80 Series Dragon and Phoenix Pen does not state its presence. It shouts it in Ancient Mandarin. From the ornately sculptured ruby-eyed dragon that wraps around the body, to the elegant phoenix that adorns the cap, to the aptly used yin yang that sits atop the finial, hinting to the opposing duality of dragon and phoenix, this pen will bring out the light and dark in every user. There is absolutely no doubt that this pen will garner comments and attention wherever it is used. The weight of it alone is quite astounding and the sheer shock and awe appearance of this pen is reason enough to add it to any collection. Amazingly enough, this pen also writes as well as it looks, with a smooth nib and comfortable hold, aided rather than hindered by the dragon body. While the cap can be screwed to the base for excessively encumbered posted writing, this is inadvisable due to the severe risk of wrist injury. Be assured, this pen is not for the faint of heart, but for the bold, the daring and the attention-seeking.
The construction is solid molded brass, with gold coloured steel trim and embedded imitation red jewels. The noticeable weight is a testament to its solid brass construction.
The grip section is smooth and tapered and makes this pen very comfortable to write with. The thread from the cap sits below the level of the fingers and does not impede comfort.
The nib is a two-toned stainless steel medium-fine nib, with some minor element of flex. JINHAO nibs are renowned for having a noticeably buttery smoothness to them, and are a genuine pleasure to write with, despite their affordability, and the 80 Dragon does much to please here.
The feed is a JINHAO patent original, which delivers a continuous, unbroken flow of ink. The true pleasure of writing with a fountain pen lies in the smooth and rich feeling of ink flowing to paper, and the feed of this pen provides this in droves.
The cap is a screw top, meaning that it will not fall off while being carried, preventing ink spills. It is also made of solid sculptured brass, with a small gold dome on the finial. The pen can be used both uncapped and posted, as the cap screws onto the base of the pen. The cap screws on and off very smoothly with no squeak.
The converter, which most of our pens come with, is very easily operated, holds a considerable amount of ink and is easily cleaned and maintained. The whole pen can be disassembled and cleaned.
All in all, the 80 Dragon and Phoenix Pen is a sturdy, elegant and pleasurable pen to use. It is comparable in quality to other models that can cost hundreds of dollars, but at an insanely competitive price.
